Loops was built on a simple but radical idea: short-form video should serve people, not exploit them.
Loops.video is the flagship instance of Loops — an open-source, federated alternative to commercial short-video platforms, created by the team behind Pixelfed".
We built Loops because we believe the era of handing your creativity over to algorithms designed to extract attention and sell ads should be over. Your videos, your audience, your community — none of that should belong to a corporation.
Loops runs on ActivityPub, the same open protocol that powers Mastodon, Pixelfed, and the wider fediverse. That means your content can reach people across the social web, and you’re never locked in. If you ever want to move to another Loops instance — or leave entirely — you can, and we’ll help you do it.
We’re not backed by venture capital. We’re not chasing growth metrics or building toward an exit. Loops is funded by the community, built in the open, and governed by people who actually use it.
Every feature we ship is guided by one question: is this good for creators and their communities?
If the answer is no, we don’t ship it.
Our Mission
We’re reclaiming short-video sharing for humanity.
Social media should serve people, not exploit them. Loops is an ethical alternative to commercial short-video platforms — a space where creators, people, and visual artists can share their work without invasive tracking, data mining, or dark-pattern design.
As an open-source project, we believe in radical transparency and true community governance. Every feature we build is designed with user privacy and experience in mind — not advertising revenue or engagement metrics.
Our values, in plain language:
- **Privacy as a fundamental right. Your content is yours. Period.
- **Ethical design. No dark patterns or manipulative interfaces.
- **Global accessibility. Available to anyone with internet access.
- **Community ownership. Users have a voice in platform decisions.
- **Sustainable growth. Building for long-term impact, not quick profit.
Why Loops Matters
The major short-video platforms have the same business model: harvest your attention, sell it to advertisers, and keep you scrolling at any cost. Creators are at the mercy of opaque algorithms, arbitrary moderation, and the constant threat of being deplatformed overnight.
Loops is different by design. Because it’s built on ActivityPub, no single company can own the network. Because it’s open-source, anyone can inspect, fork, or self-host it. And because it’s community-funded, we answer to users — not shareholders.
The fediverse already proved this model works for text and photos. Loops is here to do the same for video.
